Photography, it’s been a while
July 30, 2010 - 7:46 am (Photography - Portfolio)

I went for a walk with Jenz along the Rideau Canal and eventually into a Turkish festival that was happening in Confederation Park.

Moving my high res images
June 13, 2010 - 7:22 am (Photography - Portfolio)

The migration from Zenfolio to Flickr is going well. I’ve got about 1/4 of the content uploaded. Once it’s all there, I have to create a new interface for the content and expose it from my portfolio. Client content will be password protected, so that’ll be a second phase.

Overall, it appears that I’m going to be creating a custom ecommerce engine that’s Flickr powered.

Website upgrades
June 5, 2010 - 8:55 pm (Photography - Portfolio - Work)

I’m going to be pulling my gallery offline while I do a major upgrade using my new JavaScript library, aFrame. I’m not really seeing the value in having a so-so SaaS system manage my content with an extremely limited template; when I can make my own do so much more.

Johnny & Michelle’s Wedding
January 14, 2010 - 9:34 am (Photography - Portfolio)

Yesterday I finished processing the photos from Johnny & Michelle Optis’ wedding in Jamaica. Man, what a wonderful couple! They have amazing chemistry, and it really comes across in the pictures. I’ve put a select bunch of the photos in my Weddings sample gallery.

Refined the eye candy on the portfolio
December 3, 2009 - 12:07 pm (Photography - Portfolio - Work)

First task of my morning was fixing the keyboard event for navigating the image grid on my portfolio. The original template had a row size of 10, and unfortunately that was what I made the event for. I rewrote the up/down keypress logic and then started on tweaking the CSS more; and adding eye candy.

Once I worked out the fades on everything, I discovered it didn’t run very well in IE8. This led me to the decision to remove all fading from IE browsers (not just <8), and I think it was correct. The site is snappy in IE, and buttery smooth in everything else I test against.

Transitioning away from Flickr
November 28, 2009 - 8:22 am (Photography - Portfolio)

Yesterday I uploaded a good amount of content to my gallery that I had been keeping on Flickr. My original portfolio plan was to feed the images from Flickr via the API, but since I’ve been using Zenfolio for the gallery/client area Flickr just doesn’t fit into the plan anymore.

I’ve barely uploaded to Flickr in months, which is a pretty large paradigm shift from how I used to deposit images on the net.

I’m slacking on using my camera in my spare time

A little bit of the Ottawa sky. I need to make more time for myself.

I finished Kyla’s family portrait set
August 20, 2009 - 9:25 am (Photography - Portfolio)

The pictures have been uploaded into my gallery and exported to Facebook and Flickr. I love the recent upgrades to Zenfolio.

A few more portraits processed
August 19, 2009 - 10:34 am (Photography - Portfolio)

I’ve finished processing the beginning and the end of the photo shoot with Kyla and her girls. Awesome results from great subjects. I have the middle of the shoot (aka the park) half way completed, so I should have the set finished tonight.

These last 2 shoots has made me realize I need to upgrade my radio triggers to something faster. Maybe a set of Radio Poppers JrX or CyberSyncs.

The portrait shoot with Kyla and the girls was great
August 17, 2009 - 8:49 am (Photography - Portfolio)

The day was extremely hot and humid, but we still got a ton of great pictures of Kyla with her little girls. The majority were taken at a very scenenic park Kyla knew of in a town a short drive from her house; so she packed up the kids and I followed in my car with my gear.

I ended up shooting outdoors solely with my DA* 50-135 stopped down a little at f4-f5.6, with a little f2.8 at the right times.

After we were done in the park (aka sweating to death) we went back to their home for a short shoot inside the living room. Kyla gave the girls some freezies and I fired away with some umbrellas setup. The shots have a very natural “at home” feeling to them, so I’m very happy. I basically shadowed her during a weekend afternoon, and her praise of the shots viewed from the camera put a big smile on my face.

She’s gonna love the final results online and in print.
