I have started the web site/app migration from my host Site5, to my home server. I’ll be happy once everything is off the host, but the email is proving to be somewhat tricky. Do I host that, or offload it to a service provider? Should I have my domain registrar do the DNS work?
Small decisions to make; but they’re holding me up on completing this task.
I’ve recently switched my home server (AMD Opteron 170/4GB ram/hybrid RAID 5/static IP) from Windows (2003->2008->7) to Ubuntu Server 9.04. It’s been a great refresher on Linux, however I forgot about kernel dependency and installed 9.10, and then realized I couldn’t use my RAID card. It was only a few hours of lost time, but it still sucked. Getting 9.04 going took about 20-30mins because I knew what to install, and in what order.
It’s pretty sweet for web app development.
As I’m writing this, Jennifer is preparing a nice tufu stir-fry for our Sunday dinner and I’m already facing the realization that tomorrow is Monday; and I’ll be back at work.
Sad face.
Today was the last day for one of my original teammates at work. I’m going to miss his colorful commentary on things, and the smoke breaks (I don’t smoke, I just go for the sunlight & breezes).
I’ve been enjoying having Ubuntu Server 9.04 running on my server at home. It’s been a good learning experience. I’m trying a network upgrade to 9.1 now. I’m hoping that doesn’t go wrong.
Jen‘s produced some awesome pictures this week, you should go look.
I’ve decided that instead of releasing a standalone version, it’ll become a hosted service/saas. This comes at a cost of more development time, to create the account management/etc. I’m going to allow custom CSS loading, and possibly some kind of online template editing. I’m not sure yet. Lots of ideas. I’m thinking that integrating a Zenfolio account will be the next major iteration.
I’m looking forward to taking my Norco Launch (’03) to the office tomorrow & Friday. I need to give it a quick tune up tonight so there’s no surprises tomorrow.
So I’ve been super busy with work, and side projects. I just recoded my company website to use a series of patterns for easy extensibility and a performance boost. It’s just a case of putting theory into practice, and it worked out well.
Work has been interesting. I’ve been getting very familiar with the various objects and blur of layers in the project I’m on. It’s interesting, I guess. I’m not sure how else to explain that large amount of code that doesn’t do much.
I’ve taken on a small side project of building Jenz a new computer, reusing my workstation from 2 years ago with a new optical drive, hdd, ram and video card. The hardware went together nicely, and it’s in a mini ATX case, so it’s pretty small compared to the beast of a P4 she’s working on right now.
I’ve almost wrapped up awFlickr development. Last night I realized there might be an issue with my plan of sending data back to Flickr from un-authorized users, which I’ll have to look into. Oh wells.
Things are progressing well.
To recap, my reef was in fine shape; then I moved to Ottawa and things died, then I got algae and ever since then I’ve been going through battles with the thing. A few months back I got a Tunze 9005 skimmer and the break in period didn’t seem that stellar, but I knew it was an improvement.
When we came back from Jamaica (January) the skimmer hadn’t collected much skimmate; not a good sign. I didn’t really have time to investigate the issue, so I made sure I wasn’t over feeding and have been doing the husbandry tasks.
Then I decided to reset the skimmer, and voila! It’s working fantastically! I had been making the mistake of getting my hands inside the reactor, which would deposit natural oil, which had a negative effect on the skimming. User error has been fixed, I think.
I’m so impressed, I don’t believe I’ll get a tank with overflows when we move into a larger place. My skimmer and hang on back refugium is perfect as a large scale “nano” setup.
