Weekend in Windsor
June 29, 2009 - 11:59 am (Misc)

Detroit skyline from our hotel

Friday morning Jen and I drove to Windsor for my cousin Marc’s wedding. The drive to Windsor was a bit of a pain. It was very sunny, averaging 30c before humidex and my car windows aren’t tinted yet. That’s a combo for hell, because the drive took approximately 9 hours thanks to a very, very slow “Express” highway through Toronto. We came to a complete stop more than once.

Once we arrived in Windsor, we were glad to find our hotel room had an awesome view of Detroit. Ceasar’s was on the next block to the right, with a Midway setup on the water front! The hotel was run down a little. It looked like a standard Travel Lodge from the 70s-80s with little to no up keep since it’s construction, but the location made up for that.

Saturday morning was rushed. I had left my suit shirt in Ottawa, so we had to find something at 8:30am at a Walmart we drove past when we entered the city. By 11am we were at the chapel in Essex, which is a small town about 30 minutes from Windsor. The wedding was great. Marc & Shannon entertained slightly with their behavior (Marc’s a joker). They ended up signing the wrong certificates at the end of the ceremony, it was hilarious.

The reception took place in Windsor at a community center. The room was smaller than we expected, but was perfect for the wedding party. There was an open bar that I couldn’t enjoy because I was the designated driver. Somehow Jen missed the news and didn’t drink much.

At one point I practically ran into a glass window while looking the other way (I thought I was pointed in the direction of a door). It was probably the funniest thing that happened that night, and no one saw it! I’m talking full speed jog here with a huge head bounce backwards. There was an older couple in the parking lot that heard the impact and described it as someone slamming a car trunk when I asked if they had seen the funny moment. Somehow I didn’t bleed, but I did leave a nose/eyebrow mark on the glass (which every saw as the evening went on). Fun times.

It was great seeing the majority of my family. Not everyone could make it, but I’m glad I met my cousin Erin’s husband Kirk. His air guitar rivalled my uncle’s.

Between the wedding events we went to a car show / Elvis event taking place near the hotel and saw a lot of amazing vehicles.

Revised my resume this morning
June 25, 2009 - 10:06 am (Work)

I added my portfolio as the latest job. I don’t know if I could stretch out the description more; or if it’d be beneficial so I kept it short. Monster isn’t emailing me like it should, sigh.

Beating the summer heat

The weekend was pretty quiet
June 22, 2009 - 9:45 am (Misc - Photography - Portfolio)

We had poor weather roll in Friday afternoon, and it left sometime during early morning on Monday. On and off rain with heavy cloud cover doesn’t make for fun afternoons outside.

I added a few more pictures to the gallery on my portfolio this morning.

Finally got around to ordering new business cards
June 19, 2009 - 10:28 am (Photography - Work)

The title says it all. I was going to order a revised version of my last set, but I decided it was too bland for a photographer’s business card. I opted for a mini card set from moo with a lot of my botanical garden pictures, which happen to be for sale (print & digital copy). I figure my best prime with fantastic plants should be a good first impression of my work.

Final portfolio changes complete

I setup my price lists this morning and started offering licensed digital downloads. I hope people respect the license, but who knows right?

How I shoot with a Gary Fong Lightsphere

Apparently I’m using this in an uncommon way. I think it suits the the semi pro Pentax setup perfectly.

I’ve decided on my next light purchase
June 17, 2009 - 12:05 pm (Photography)

My next gear purchase will be a pair of Pentax AF-360FGZ flashes so I can have 3 portable P-TTL strobes. I can’t think of a better small setup to use with an on camera flash and two (or more) wireless slaves using P-TTL data.

Leon brought a 400 to the Flickr meeting

It was huge, hilarious and very impressive all at the same time. I kinda like the camo wrap he put on it.

Jen and I arrived a bit after 6 with flashes on camera, she had my Vivitar 285HV and I had my AF-540FGZ on my new Stroboframe VH2000 bracket. I think it was the first time I enjoyed using my flash without really having to think about it. The bracket is a little awkward when I turn the camera ccw for portraits because of the arm and a bend to strengthen the bottom bracket; but it works and keeps the flash where I want it.

Slight Portfolio tweaks
June 15, 2009 - 12:25 pm (Photography - Portfolio)

Today I renamed the subdomain for the Zenfolio account to gallery because it’s more appropriate. I also re-organized some photos, did a little culling and generally have a good idea of what I want to feature in it.
