I think I’ve found my digital b&w workflow
April 28, 2009 - 10:40 am (Photography - Portfolio)

My 50-135 + R25A filter helps my camera record great red images which I convert to black & white after processing the raw as a 16bit tiff (90% of the work happens here). Next I load the tiff in Photoshop and do the conversion using the Red Filter settings. I might tweak the levels or curves again at this point; depending on the scene.

Not much photography this past weekend

Custom

I had three sessions lined up; one event and two landscape. Nothing worked out though. I wasn’t able to work the event and the weekend was rained out by a storm that moved across the country pretty fast. All I got was a few photos while I walked downtown on Friday around 4pm.

Delicious and simple

Mmmm stir fry

A bell pepper/asparagus stir fry. Tasty, healthy and simple. The harsh light is from playing around with diffused flash position & bounce (not a lot of effort went into it).

Back to the wired…
April 22, 2009 - 10:50 am (PC / Console)

I’ve given up on having my fileserver as a wireless client on my network. I’ve tried literally all brands sold in Canada (I made sure to get different chipsets/models) and I’ve concluded it all sucks.

My Linksys WRT310N performs great with my laptop’s Atheros AR5009 chip (11a/g/n), averaging 10-12MB/s with large files. Everything I’ve bought tops out at 25-50% of that speed, including a different 11n/5ghz router + 5ghz wnic.

I’m going to build a simple/low power htpc to access my files stored over the gigabit lan. It’s cheaper and much faster.

Realistic HDR landscape images rock

’nuff said.

Food, drinks and friends at the new Clock Tower
April 17, 2009 - 9:17 am (Misc - Photography)

The lone black brick

Jen and I met my old friend Brent at the new Clock Tower in the Byward Market for beer and wings last night. I hadn’t seen him in about 8 or 9 years, so the conversation was entertaining. Jen and Brent worked for the same company (in different divisions) at one point, and both disliked said company. That was fun to watch.

I’m looking forward to the next time we meet.

Tamil Protest on Parliment
April 16, 2009 - 9:26 am (Photography)

Yesterday afternoon I (finally) made my way to the ongoing protest at Parliment Hill. It wasn’t as active as the first day, but it was still organized and large. The police had setup around the protest area in small groups & pairs, with fire extinguishers near by.

I love this picture. It’s awesome and flawed, and mine.

Probably not as exciting as you were expecting.
